Road wheels for rigid MTB?

An old early 90s chromoly Kona Kalauea is stripped down and awaiting blasting and a powder coating.
It will retain its 3x7 rings and sprockets and its canti brakes, but will not be going on the dirt again. It is light and chuckable and fun on tarmac as a sort of 'darty' street rat thingummy. Same bars, same funky quill stem with internal brake cable... but the wheels are tired and bashed after a hard life.
I am looking for something lightish, strongest and not-too-costlyish with a 26" rim to replace them with. I will be fitting a road tyre with a nice, fat, round profile that will sit on a wide rim.
I realise that the list is as long as one's arm... but either as components or complete wheels, has anyone found a 'perfect answer' when making the same change?

I could be completely wrong here but you could put road wheels on a 29er but not on a 26" MTB. They may go on but pretty sure it would mess up the geometry.

just had a quick google, you seem to have two choices, just get a cheap MTB wheel and use slick tyres, or go custom, something like the below....

Lots of people have good 26" rim-brake wheels gathering dust in sheds / garages - why not put a wanted add on here / Singletrack or Retrobike? £50 should get you a decent pair of hoops.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Sound advice from Monty Dog. I done wrote a thing in MTB Parts Wanted.
Failing that route, I can see what's around in the LBS line of things... It even buy myself some hubs, spokes and rims and get at them.0 -
So..... I bit the bullet and am awaiting the arrival of some Shimano hubs, DT Swiss double-butted spokes and some nice-ish Mavic rims.... Then my first ever attempt at wheel building.... in my fifties. But it seems a good thing to know how to do and a neighbour has lent me a jig and a dishing thingummy.... and after all... I've changed a wheel and replaced the battery in my lights, so it's not as if I am totally ignorant in the matter of mechanical finesse.0
