New Bike Gears

Hey guys,

I just bought a road bike from craigslist, and everything out well, but there is one thing I can't figure out. I've never owned a road bike before, so I don't know if this is normal, but I can't figure out how to change the gears while riding for the life of me. The attached link shows how the gear shifters look, with two metal bars and a black piece where you can tighten or loosen the metal bars. Any help is appreciated, it is getting to difficult to ride some places without being able to change gears!

Thanks

The lever on the right works the rear gears. Pushing it forward makes it harder to pedal (you go further for each turn of the pedals).

Pulling it backwards makes it easier to pedal(you go less far for each turn of the pedals).

THe left lever swaps it from big ring to little ring. Pulling it back makes it harder. Pushing it forward makes it easier.

You have to take one hand off the handlebars & push the lvr in the pic up & down.
