Any recommendations for the above? Particularly one that is breathable and won't end up making me as wet from sweat as the rain would if I just didn't bother?
Budget up to around £100 or so.

Mavic Cosmic Pro H2O? Not as packable as the Hotpack, but a stretchy breathable fabric that is supposedly 100% waterproof.
Nice tight fit and no flapping.0 -

If you dont mind the colour - only the grey one with cobblestones printed on it...0 -
In the end I've ordered this, as it was one of the few things available anywhere in my size.

I have one of those. It's the nicest feeling shell I have owned, but I still get sweaty in it. Don't expect miracles with any jacket. I have only worn it in proper rain so far. When it's cool enough, I plan to test it as a wind shell so I'll start the ride in it when expecting mixed weather. I'll be happy if it breathes well in the dry because that will simplify the choice for winter. FWIW, mine didn't seems to have any DWR type finish. Not that I care too much, factory applied DWR seems to bugger off in two washes anyway.0 -

I bought a Castelli Riparo Rain Jacket. Its okay. Can be a bit on the tight fitting side so its easy to mess the zip up if you're not careful. Took me a day to realise if you turn it inside out it stuffs into its own pocket like a stuff sack. Just fits in a jersey pocket, but with a bit of a bulge and I dont think you'll be able to get anything else in that pocket. Its not too hot like wearing a crisp packet but then I haven't been cycling hard in it."The Prince of Wales is now the King of France" - Calton Kirby0

Sorry but you're off the mark a bit there. North Face have never made Event jackets. Most likely was Hyvent, their own brand fabric, which I agree is shiite.
Event is in a different league for breathability. Best breathable waterproof I've ever tried but the ones I have are a little on the heavy side for a cycling jacket.
I use the Endura FS260 Pro race cape and I really rate it.0 -
no waterproof jacket is going to keep you dry if you ride even moderately hard, if you're pootling to the shops there's plenty of options otherwise its boil in the bag time.
look for windproof not waterproof would be my adviceRule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

I use the FS260 Pro shell, slightly more permanent rain jacket rather than a packable race cape, but it really is an excellent jacket. It does roll up, although it is quite a big roll when you have a pump in the middle, it does stick out the middle pocket for the proper pro look though, I literally ride with it all the time, even if abroad, so handy for cold mornings or long descent. I can ride the full length of the local fast chaingang with it zipped up with absolutely no overheating. Fit's well, I am extremely fussy with things being as tight as possible. Although I am 6'1 and 75kg and use a small, so they probably aren't the raciest cut ever.0 -

Yeah, I'm not after miracles, just something better than the cheap ones that have you sweating as if you're in a sauna within 5 minutes of riding.
TBH, if you are working hard enough, I think they all do that regardless of material or price. It's just that some are [slightly] less like a sauna than others!Cannondale Synapse Carbon Ultegra

Castelli S or M, that's like Youth sizing for most other makes.0 -
I have just bought one of those Gore Shakedry jackets for £166 in the Millets sale. Not used it yet and I hope I never do but it fits in a jersey pocket.
I have an Endura pack jacket keeps out the wind but not much else.0 -
I'm thinking that £65 event jacket looks good for the price. I've owned walking event jackets and simple design is needed to get the most from the fabric. Right now I'm wearing a very light gore-tex pro climbing jacket. Short length but a bit of a tail, long arms that don't shorten when you raise your arms up a good hood that I can wear and still see behind me because the hood moves with the head. It's a good jacket for walking but it's still boil in the bag despite having a very high breathability figure and simple design to take advantage of them.
My question, because I have no experience of cycling jackets, is about fit. That DHB jacket is called a performance fit, is that tight. What length is it both front and rear? I'm 6'5" tall 42" chest and 32 - 34" waist so I'm guessing xl is needed because it's a tight fit performance. What are hoodless jackets like in the rain? Serious question because I don't wear helmets all the time. I'm guessing not nice in heavy rain.
Is there a better, packable jacket for commuting? Perhaps with a hood like mtb jackets sometimes have.0
