Looking for a low profile headset bearing cover as want to lower a stem further than a current Ritchey dust cover will allow. Does anyone know of any UK based supplier or alternative to slamthatstem? -

  • I got one of these recently to reduce my stack...

It's 3D printed nylon plastic so it doesn't have the smooth feel of polished metal or carbon.

Why do you need an alternative?

Cheers, did you need spacers at all?

The slamthatstem cover itself is reasonably priced at $24 posted but UK vat and postage surcharges basically double the cost. Its not breaking the bank, just principle!

If you've got a lbs, pop in and see if they have any in their boxes of bits and bobs. It's the kind of thing workshops keep and you might find they have something shorter lying around.

Thanks, dropped him a message. Were his expensive and do they come with the micro spacers?

    £10, what micro spacers?

And are you sure there isn't one tucked up inside the existing cover
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

No they were very reasonable, far cheaper than the STS covers. You should get the depth to fit your headset (how much headset extends above top of headtube then subtract 0.5mm). Doesn't come with micro spacers but he can supply them

OK thanks. He got back to me and has 12 different types so should have one that fits (hopefully without need for spacers). They're only a tenner posted so can't go wrong with that. Out of interest, on what bikes have you used them and did you need any spacers?

I've used them on two Ridley Heliums without using spacers. To get them to fit without spacers, measure the height that your headset extends beyond the top of the head tube then subtract 0.5mm (e.g. If headset is 4.5mm higher than top of head tube, order a 4mm deep spacer)

I've measured tonight and the compression ring rises 4.8mm above headtube. My existing Ritchey cover is only 8mm so at best jorj's cover would only lower my stem by 2-3mm and leave an unacceptable gap of 0.8mm between top of headtube and bottom of cover. He has confirmed this. I therefore need a lower profile compression ring, or change the headset entirely!

  • I use them from http://www.lowandlong.com , the 's5' one fits nicely on my Cane Creek headset on my Ridley

Yes, there is one underneath the existing cover, but the compression shim is still 4.8mm above head tube, after its removed unfortunately.....

I ordered one from Jorj after seeing this this thread. Very pleased.

Ordered a 4mm by 45mm cap after measuring, came 2 days later and its nicely finished, flat at the top, curved at the ends. Fitted with 3 shims and headset is rock solid and drops the bars more than 10mm. Substantially lighter than the Alpina cap it replaced too.

Possible compromise in is sealing, no O rings at the top, and I fitted the one from the old cap on the bottom. So was very generous with the grease when fitting. But would definitely recommend, I think it looks miles better than a minus 17 stem.

Glad to hear it, I ordered last night. I had to get one of these due to replace my existing tall compression ring -
    https://www.tredz.co.uk/.M-Part-Elite-Headset-Spare-Expansion-Compression-Ring_45210.htm?sku=117144&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=google_shopping&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIupOu3M2m1gIV3MmyCh1V8Qa6EAQYASABEgKfpvD_BwE#

The M Part ring sits flush (or just above) the top of headtube so I also now need a 2mm spacer to go under a 2mm cover. Already have a -17 stem so this is last resort to lower the bars.

Jorj has been very helpful so I would also recommend. Seems a very good alternative to slamthatstem and no customs / additional VAT / RM handling charges etc!

  • Got the new headset cover fitted but now have a slight issue with my -17 degree stem, in that the underside fouls on the cover! Solved meantime with a 2mm spacer under the stem. Looking for a 1mm spacer (as opposed to micro shims) but nowhere seems to sell them individually here. I have loads of spacers but it seems 1mm are quite rare. Ironically, Slamthatstem sell them, due to the very problem I have! Grrrrrr

Sorry to drag old thread up, but was searching the forum for something along these lines. Also trying to find a low/ zero stack for my Helium SLX, so curious what size you went for with yours?
