Mudguards for an Allez
slowbike

Was an expensive evening yesterday ... rode to the pub ... had a pint, then on the way back I got a slow puncture - checked the wheel and noticed a split in the sidewall - ok to ride on for now, but will need replacing. Having discovered I didn't have any levers I decided to just pump up the tyre - as it seemed to last a couple of miles at a time, so that'll do... putting the wheel back in (in the dark) I caught the mudguard - and it split ... tbf, it's been on the bike for quite a few years and done stirling work during my commutes...
So - now I'm looking for a replacement for the Crud Road Racer II mudguards. I quite like the full coverage of the rear guard - right down to the bottom bracket ... But they are a very close fit all around - so just wondering if there are any other options.
The downside I have is that the Allez doesn't have any mounting points for guards - and the clearance isn't huge either.

I'm running conti 23s and SKS Raceblade Long without any issues at all on my Allez over winter.
I don't mess about with the QR part of the guards though, just do a full dismantle if the need arises.Advocate of disc brakes.0 -
Looked at those - what's the coverage like?0

Good on the rear although the forward facing element doesn't go all the way down to the BB. That said I'm still much drier than my "non guard using" riding pal.

Hmm - I wonder if I could use a bit of my Cruds to do that bit to the BB ... just my riding is mostly country roads - loads of crap everywhere.0

Why not get Cruds again??? I had them on my last winter bike (Ridley Compact) and they were fantastic.
I now have a Felt VR30 for winter and it has bulbous 28mm tyres on 21mm rims which make them closer to 32mm when inflated and so MK2 cruds wont work so I bought the MK3's which are also very good but don't look as neat as the MK2's but saying that, they come off easily and are easily adjusted once you have them fitted and they appear much stronger/robust than the MK2's.0 -
Not sure as the SKS have the quick release bit that clamps between the brake pivot.
Now just a thought, are you running a disc brake frame?Advocate of disc brakes.0 -
I could just get Cruds again - but MK3's are not the MK2's - so it's like getting completely new guards ... so I may as well see if there are other options ...
One annoyance with the cruds is because clearance over the tyre is so small, if you pick up any crud, it then rubs against the guard - when you do winter commutes it becomes a frequent occurance... perhaps there's a bit more clearance with the MK3s?
I quite like the concept of the SKS RB longs - just I'd like it to extend further down to the BB .. one huge benefit of the cruds...
No - it's not a disc brake frame0 -
I sense a bodge on the horizon...Advocate of disc brakes.0
