Sorry, yet another 'which bike' question

Hi, I've been lurking here for a while however it appears I am still none the wiser as to which bike to get. I'm early 50s and up until earlier this year did a lot of walking, the last trip being the 190 miles of the Coast to Coast which I backpacked over 11 days last September. Unfortunately the knees are not upto the impact of such walks and I agreed with the consultant that, with some injections, id pack it in. He suggested cycling instead and the idea of bikepacking some long multiday routes at some point appeals.

Leaving aside the Surlys etc which are too pricey for my first bike it seems as though i need a hardtail MB to do the Pennine bridleway etc. Does this sound right or am i miles off? I want to stay off roads as much as possible too. 3-5 day trips self sufficient.

Being a bit more specific, I like the look of the Cannondale Cujo 1 so would really like to know how far off my thinking is from what I need, if that makes sense please?

cheers

Sam

  • Looks like a nice bike to me, up to date components, decent fork.

It's much more of a mountain bike than a off tourer though, fat hubs, chunky tyres, so two considerations spring to mind.

It may not have many mounting options for fixed racks and panniers if that's something you'd want. Something to check.

The 1x11 whilst a good quality one with GX, may limit you on top speed on roads, unless you're happy to just free wheel when you run out of gears on a down hill road. But you won't really have that problem on the PBW.
  • Thanks Mattyfez, its proving tough to find what I need within my price range and there are lots of compromises as you point out. I guess I'm trying to get something as close to what I need but accept I won't get everything. I figured getting a half decent hardtail would be the best thing given I cant have it all. I'm still not sure the Cujo is the closest I can get but it's a start I hope.

    Cheers

  • I did a quick search and you can get mountain bike racks, I imagine you'd have to be careful what you buy though with that bike with its wider tyres and boost hub.
