I'm getting a couple of Shimano R500 wheels for the winter bike. I'm going to replace the rim tape, but not sure what width I need. Anyone know? Thanks.

  • I don't know what the old tape is, not got the wheels yet. Wanted to get the tape ready.

for typical road wheels 15-16mm tape is fine

  • Thanks sungod, you've confirmed what I thought, I'll get some 16mm on order.

My R501s and the previous RS10s came with blue plastic rim tape already installed. It's still working well, and one lot is 10 years old, so I've never felt compelled to replace it.

    Why are you doing so?
  • I have read in several places that the rim tape on these R500's is not reliable. So for the sake of a couple of pounds while I haven't got the tires on I thought I would change it.
