Brakes are these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... prod129564

The lever is showing quite a lot of "play" around the pivot after a good couple of years of use.

Is there likely to be anything I could do to stablise it (presumably its just the hole in which the lever sits and pivots that has expanded / widened through usage?) Or is it time for a new brakeset?

As you suspect the bolt or hole for the bolt has worn.

You need to take it apart to see what is worn. There may be a separate pressed in bush otherwise you may need to make and fit one.

Acera brakes are towards the lower end so won't be too expensive to replace, you may even upgrade.

Cheers. Yes, I know where they are on the spectrum, but they are reasonably priced, effective and simple to maintain. For an upgrade that I'd notice on the bike I suspect £70-£100 or so might be needed, can't see me finding that any time soon for this particular bike.

One possible bodge is to make a shim from a soft drinks can. A small strip wrapped around the bolt to take up the slack.

Being aluminium it won't last long but nothing to lose trying it.
