Can anyone recommend a good hotel in Costa Adeje in Tenerife as I'd like to spend a week there in November.. Or for that matter what resort in Tenerife would you recommend? Thanks

If you are intending to cycle only then I would advise staying away from the main resorts. Not sure what November will be like but in September any cycling on the coastal side of the "motorway" was not pleasant at all. On that basis Adeje should be better than the main coast resorts.

We stayed in an AirBNB in San Miguel.

    The cycling is great.

Stayed at Vincci Seleccion La Plantacion for a few years now. Can't fault it.

Went to the Costa Adeje Palace, May this year, it was very nice, but this wasn't a cycle holiday.
  • Without wanting to hijack, has anyone any experience of Puerto de Santiago as a base to ride from? Supposed to be heading in a week but first time heading out there!

Stayed at the Marylanza, easy to get on to the road up Teide and a 15 minute walk from BikePoint, an excellent bike shop. Had no bother at all on the road in August, apart from the heat.

Could be very busy near the coast.

Stayed in Los Christianos in August and no issues at all with the roads, the drivers were actually overcautious when passing. From Los Christianos you can easily access the TF-655 which will get you on the other side of the motorway (TF-1) and up into the villages which are much quieter routes up to Vilaflor.

Decent base - I stayed not far away at Los Gigantes; easy access to Masca and the newly resurfaced road up to Teide via Chio. In April this year only the last 2km of the road was not resurfaced, I imagine it will all be done now. Becasue the road is so flowing with no switchbacks you can descend 30km from the crater to Chio without touching the brakes.
  • I stayed in Costa Adeje ..... I would not recommend it, in fact I hated it. Bland: shit food, shit beer and shit wine. But I don't like holiday resorts so I am biased.

As a base for cycling it is though not a good one if you are just cycling. To get to the nice parts of the routes and climbs it's a pretty long slog on some pretty unattractive and busy roads. It was fine for me the deal was if we went in August I would go out at dawn for 4 - 5 hours and then take the kids to Siam Park in the afternoon whilst the missus relaxed. Masca twice and Mount Tiede 6 times.

Having said that if you hook up with BikePoint (I couldn't they ride out too late in the day) then they transport to where the nice parts of the rides start. For example cycling out west to Masca is truly, truly epic. But the coast routes from Costa Adeje to get there are not nice so you'll spend over an hour doing some tough rolling climbs just to get to the nice part of the ride, I think it was about 1,500m before I got to what I thought was the first climb! The same is true for the Mount Tiede climbs, although they are a lot closer so 20 - 30mins.

If I went back I'd think of staying in Vilaflor as all the riding up there and out West from there is special. Also I think the main route, T51, up to the top is not the best. Far quieter and more scenic are the T21 and the brutal T563. Also if you do the standard Southern Tiede loop the climb this side is much more interesting and as they have just resurfaced the TF38 you'll want to spend your time going down this huge decent which is you, a smooth road, gravity and very few corners.

I can't say about any other resorts or the north. But out west was much more scenic and Spanish.

I agree the TF21 is such a quiet and stunning road up to Vilaflor, you hardly see a car. It does take a bit of pedalling to get there but I quite enjoyed riding up through some of the villages. The TF563 is really difficult but again, very quiet. I would advise only going down the TF51 (main route up) as you'll get passed by quite a lot of cars and coaches.

Go to gran canaria instead...much better cycling
  • So - above is helpful, thanks. My basic question - where is the best place to stay as a base for 4 days of cycling in Tenerife (including, obviously, at least one ascent of Teide!). Lots of chat but no definitive as yet. Advice gratefully received.

I got an Air BnB in Costa Adeje

Having cycled up that route couple of weeks back I can confirm that the last 2km have been resurfaced - quiet road - great scenery!

We stayed in La Colletta which is just beyond Adeje - very quiet and some really good restaurants.

We hired bikes from BikePoint as part of their organised tours and can't recommend them high enough!

BikePoint are brilliant. I was told the roads were all resurfaced as part of a bid for the Vuelta.
  • Guys, great help thanks. Coleta with rides up Teide and Masca with bikes from BikePoint sounds a plan all in.
