Have tires changed much in the last 20 years?

I have a 20-year-old StumpJumper MX2 that I'd like to start road riding again. It currently has 26x1.5 Avocet Cross tires that have dry rot. Is the mounting technology the same today as it was then, or do I have to change rims or buy 'vintage' tires? Recommendations welcome. Talking about vintage, I'm going to be 70 this year and eventually would like to graduate to my 20-year-old+ Colnago Master Light --- that'll be a hoot.

    Nope, compounds and tread patterns have changed, but beads haven't.

    Tyre wise, I can heartily recommend a Continental Sport Contact in 26x1.6", grippy, lively feeling, good wear rate and fairly robust to punctures. I commuted for about 7000miles on 26" road tyres and they were the best of 5 different MTB slicks I tried.
    Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
