Freewheel rusted after cleaning

I cleaned my Carrera TDF's freewheel with an ordinary cog-cleaning brush and some Muc-Off, then I decided to clean my old bike's freewheel too, but I used a wire brush. The old bike's freewheel had started rusting the next day. Was it something to do with the wire brush?

Yep, the wire brush damaged the protective coating so the steel underneath can now rust.
