New Tyres

Hi guys,
Bought a hybrid for commuting in London.

Looking to replace the tyres with something thinner.
Any recommendations or advice on sizes that will fit?
The rim is 622x19 and currently has 42c tyres
Will thinner tyres increase average speed?

Very true.
Hypothetically then if im pedalling the same downgrading from 42c tyres to 28 tryes?0 -
If you're pedalling at the same cadence in the same gear, then you'll be going slower than on the bigger tyres, as the circumference will have decreased....
In reality though, you should be able to push a higher gear, as the rolling resistance should decrease, as will the weight, especially if you go for a folding tyre; it's unlikely that you'll notice a dramatic increase in average speed though.
My goto tyre is a Rubino pro 25c, which might look a bit strange on that frame, alternatively others might suggest a randonneur pro 32c, which come up more like a 28 and I tend to use these during the Winter.0
