New to cyclocross and have bought a secondhand bike which runs tubeless tyres which are 32's, I went on a group ride last night and one chap had a pair of 42's on (FMB I believe) and another had a pair of 38's. What are the benefits of running a larger tyre? are there any at all?

I need to replace the rear tyre on the bike as the tread is almost gone (knew this when i bought it) and was going to replace with like for like size wise, but as I am replacing one I thought why not ask the question about the benefit of going larger and possibly replace both.

Also what tyres would you recommend using? I will be riding a mixture of woodland trails, gravel paths, some sandy bits, muddy bits and rocky bits (seems we have it all here)

Thanks
