I commute approx. 100 miles a week on reasonable road surfaces. About to do the cyclescheme and going for a £1k bike, I'm a big lad so durability is as important as performance, very torn between these two:

Any advice & opinions very gratefully received.

Thanks

One of my road bikes is a 720 AF. It's a superb bike for the money, I've done over 5000 miles on it, and everything is still working as it should, it's a comfy ride, the saddle helps in that respect ( Fizik Arione ). I don't have any opinions on the other bike you linked to, as I've not ridden it. The only thing that takes a little bit of getting used to with the 720 AF are the direct mount brakes. They are really good, but you have to keep a close eye on the pad wear, on the rear in particular, as, if you ride it in all conditions, the position of the rear brake callipers, mean it's not as easy to spot issues, as it is with a more conventional brake position. They are not as tricky to adjust, or service, as some people may have you believe though.
  • Good deal, 20% off Giants at present. I'd go Giant for the disc brakes and wheels which are rated for heavier riders. If you can test one or both that would be good.
  • Cheers for the replies. Bit of a conundrum this one, Giant is discounted 20%, disc breaks and very good looking. Btwin has the ultegra group set Vs 105 on the Giant, is there much of difference between the two?

Difference is in the weight and finish of the components, functionality is similar.

The difference in the feel of the Ultegra set up is noticeable. The shifts tend to be more reliable, the Brifters have a lighter action on the Ultegra GS as well. After a few hundred shifts / brakes, you appreciate it.
