Hi all,

It looks like I will have to replace my chain but Im at a loss as to which to replace it with!!.
Its a Boardman team carbon with 10speed Tiagra and the specs say its a KMC X10 Chain with a Shimano CS-HG500-10, 12-28T cassette.
The cassette may also need replacing soon so I was looking at what may be worth considering, either straight swap or upgrade if the cost is reasonable. It will be the first time I have changed both but Im fairly confident with sorting it myself but have no idea of which to buy and the costs.
Any help very appreciated.

Regards.

Tony

Chain = any compatible 10s chain which you can get at a decent price.

Cassette = no change of cassette is really an 'upgrade', although some cost more than others and weigh marginally less. Unless you want a different ratio. But changing ratios is not really an upgrade.

A rule of thumb - cassettes generally last for three chains.
I doubt you need a new one just now.

    Thanks for the info.
Can someone explain why chains have a number after the chain info.

    The 73.

Its probably something easy once you know..

I always believed it came from Shimano HG73 and HG93, the 93 being the lighter chain, 73 being more robust. 93 on your Sunday bike, 73 on your commuter or wet weather bike. Of course I could be talking sh1t, not for the first time.

I always go in my local bike shop and say, 10spd chain please Daz and he flogs me one. Cadence sport was closing the other week and I picked up four chains cheap, those and pads, tubes etc, sit on the shelf until needed.
  • Don't buy the cheapest it could be made of cheese, the most expensive maybe a waist of money, get something in the middle. I've always found KMC to be a good chain and I prefers the link to join it rather than the pin. But its personal preference.
