Used to ride with some people who used a Hope 4 and they always seemed pretty good and their customer service seemed good when things broke. I'm not sure how much different/better the R4+ is over the original Hope 4.
You got more light per £ with a Magicshine type light, but when when it breaks (mine have failed multiple times) you're on your own. The Hope 4 also seemed to give a better spread of light than the Magicshines did out of the box.

Is this for a head mounted or bar mounted light? I think you can mount a Hope 4 on your lid, but they always looked big and clunky especially with the seperate battery pack. You might be better with a big light on the bars and a small one with integrated battery on your helmet (e.g. Hope 4 + Hope R2, or Exposure Toro + Joystick)

Cheap Chinese multi led emitters are an option. Cheaper enough to throw away when they fail and you probably get several sets for price of hope, very bright too

I've been using the Chinese eBay lights for past 2 year, £12 each, one for bar and one for helmet.

Exposure lights are popular with people I ride with, are very bright, don't have a separate battery pack and last a long time, but they are pricey.

Four 4th. I run a Holy Moses on the bars and an Exodus on the helmet. Awesome products; robust, very effective, good battery life, some excellent battery/light mounting solutions.

I tend to run Exposure (Diablo and Joystick) for road.

I used cheap-arsed eBay Chinese lights last winter and thought they were awesome on the solo rides I did. Then I met up with a my regular riding buddies with Exposure lights and realised the Chinese lights were somewhat less than awesome, but certainly not awful. If you have the money, the Exposure Six Pack on the bars and a pair of Joysticks on the helmet are a killer combo, but I've had cars that cost less.
