Second Hand MTB for £400-500

I was interested in getting into cross country cycling. I don't know a whole lot about bikes and would like some opinions on what to get, second hand, for around the £400-500 mark. I want something that I can use to go fairly long distances on a combination of roads and trails. I think a hard tail would be best suited for my needs. I was immediately drawn to the Scott XTC Composite series- I've seen a few for sale that were in excellent condition and seemed to have pretty decent specs (not that I know very much about it!). I also like the look of the 2X gears the more recent models possess. Not really sure why, but they look quite sleek!

Thanks for your reply. I neglected to mention that it was specifically the Composite 29er that caught my eye, not just the standard Composite. This is the kind of thing I was thinking of:

I was hoping to get people's thoughts on these bikes, and what alternatives there were to consider.0 -
Big difference in spec between the 1 and the 3, but any at around £400 odd in good condition (especially the forks) would be a decent deal.I don't do smileys.
