Hybrid update question

I am upgrading my brothers old Hydrid bike (Falcon California), with bits I have lying around the workshop.
I have changed the square taper crank/BB for a Hollow-tech 2 and Sora triple crankset. Upgraded the cassette from 8 to 9 speed, and re-used my spare Sora 9 speed road derailleurs.
I have fitted new Acera Brifters up front, and cabled all together.
Here's my problem: The rear gearing shifts fine, however the front end is problematic. Not shifting cleanly, and not being able to get dialled in.
As the Sora front derailleur is bottom pull, and the bike is cabled top pull, I've used a pulley wheel adapter below the derailleur.
From reading around I think I might be facing 2 issues here: 1) Cable pull ration for the brifters is different than the road derailleur needs; and 2) If I got a mtb front derailleur the crankset chainline/chain ring spacing may not work.
Can anyone comment, or provide advise, on this problem?
