Chain wear or worn out?
Hi all.
I've been trying to check if my chain fitted to my Boardman team carbon is just wearing or worn out and needs reolacing .
Its a 10sp tiagra and ive done around 1500 miles since december 2016. Now some of that has been during winter when the roads are s**ted up with grime and road salt.
I've checked online and there seems to be a number of camps who recommend when a chain is worn out and needs replacing.
I don't have any tools that check chain wear so can only go by what I've read online.
My chain measures 12 inches and 3 - 32nds over what when new is 12 inched over 12 chain links.
Is this worn or worn out?
Regards.
Tony

Get a good chain wear indicator tool like the Park Tool CC2 and judge it by that.
It does amaze me that people will splurge x 000 on a bike and then go chivvy about spending a few quid on a new chain to replace one they haven't bothered to keep up maintained .0 -
Im amazed to find out the vast difference in chain mileage having read up.I realise by leaving the chsin oiled but covered in s**t was probably not the best way to go about getting a low wear from the chain.
I "think" that riding my bike over winter and not cleaning it religiously may have been an underlying factor. Just wanting other people's tjoughts as i never measuted the chsin when it was new.0 -
at 3/32 i'd change it, by 1/8 it's likely to mess up the cassette so that it skips on some cogs - if things get that far you may as well run the old chain and cassette until they are really trashed, then change both
see https://www.sheldonbrown.com/chain-wear.htmlmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -

Sling this on your next Wiggle order, worth it for the price of a coffee/pint.0 -
As above. Buy a wear indicator. Mine has around 1,200 mostly dry miles on it and is not far off needing changing. Leave it too long and things get costly0
