Hi all,

looking for some advice on bikes, i'm currently in the market for a new bike though this time i am looking for a steel disc braked equipped gravel/adventure road bike.

Do you have any recommendations, what gearing setups etc are best? I think i'd prefer a 1x setup rather than 2/3x as it's more about leisure rides for me these days and i'm relatively close to some good canal paths etc.

Thanks in advance :D
MTB - Claud Butler Olympus XT
MTB - Cannondale Jekyll 3 2012
Road - Ribble Sportive Bianco/Ultegra 6800
TT - Retro 80's Argos steel Beast

Perhaps Condor Fratello Disc could be your thing, or contact Burls and he will build steel anything for you

You don't mention a budget so it's difficult to know what to suggest. For example if you can afford £1.5K then the Marin Four Corners Elite (who thinks up these bike names???) might suit you. Steel frame with SRAM 1 x 11 speed and hydraulic discs

For more money (£1.6K) you could opt for the Robinson from The Light Blue Co. Steel frame with SRAM 1 x 11 speed, but this time you have TRP Spyre mechanical discs.

If you want to get your hands dirty you could buy a Cotic Escapade frame for £400 and build it up yourself

Give us some idea of budget and we might be able to narrow down the options

Budget and whether you will be doing short gravel rides or long weekend type trips. Do you see adventure as going "off-road" or is canal path the type of riding you will be doing? (Hope that doesn't come across as being rude, just trying to understand what type of bike might suit you best)

The below forum might be worth a read....

    http://bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk/phpBB ... =7&t=10359

For adventure riding I actually prefer a flat bar, rigid folks and 650B plus tyre, I feel beaten up after 50 miles off-road on a normal gravel bike.
That being said, if money (and wife) would allow it, I would most definitely have the below bike.....

The Cotic mentioned above is a good call, I would be looking for hydraulic brakes, 1 x 11 gearing (with ability for a 42 tooth cassette), lots of bottle cage bosses and ability for a 650B wheel. (Mason Bokeh also worth a look - beautiful looking bike but also expensive)
  • Some good suggestions here, no real budget in mind as I've had to sell some of my fleet due to relocation and lack of storage.

So probably should say I'm looking for a do it all type bike. I ride a mixture of road and gravel tow paths and the odd canal path on my commute 25 miles a day and the odd weekend ride when I get a break from parental duties.

I had consider the Genesis Croix de fer but finding a frameset has been a task in its self.

  • For UK options I'm thinking Shand Stoater. Or have a look at the Mason range.
  • Just put sram rival 1 x on an off road bike and can highly recommend it. For the type of riding you want to do it is all you will need. I am running 42t with an 11-32 which covers me for most terrain but you can go 36 front and up to a 42 cassette with a long cage derailleur and xd driver hub if required.

How about an alloy Boardman cx team? SRAM Rival ,full hydro,42 and 10-42.can't fault mine.
