Hi folks. just wondering if anyone has installed one of the above? I'm in the proccess of doing it but just a bit concerned about the routing of the cable. on the old ultegra rear mech the cable was routed outwardly but it seems the new mech heads inwards.. i've included a pic - it all just seems very close to the rear wheel! picture is before ive trimmed cable..

Not an Ultegra, but an XT shadow, which is very similar. Yes, you bend the cable outwards, once you've clamped it and it will never give you any bother

All fitted, but just wondering about the 2 points at which you can attach it to the hanger, its on a roadbike, i presume this is right?!

The housing of the cable has a tight bent. On my bile turning the barrel does not have any impact with the cable tension.
The bent is too tight so the spring does not have enough power. The routing is the same as in the picture above, does it work on your?

I found that i had to actually change the barrell adjuster as the one on the r8000 series is terrible. i used an old ultegra adjuter and that gave me adjustment.

I have contacted the Bike Hot line because such design change was tested and approved. How can be that I have to change barrel?
I am curious if I get a response.
  • interested to know if you have any issues removing the rear wheel since I installed mine the job is a lot harder than it was with the old ulegra
  • Hello,

I'v got a B'twin Ultra Cf and the exit of the rear shift cable is very close to the rear derailleur. I used to use a Shimano SIS OT-SP41 as housing but the too short path creates a bend and makes the adjustement very difficult (lake of softness).

I think that Shimano recommands to use the OT-RS900 as housing for the rear derailleur R8000 and R9100. This housing is softer and will not bend when the radius of curvature is to short. I think the conception looks like brake housing without the drawbacks. You only can buy 240mm length, then you cut it in function of the distance between the exit of the frame and the barrel adjuster.

As I'm concerned, on my R8000, I replace the barrel adjuster by my old 105 and replace the OT-SP41 housing by a Jagwire brake housing (residue from brake housing replacement). Now I can adjust the tension of the shift cable easier and the housing is not bent ! More over, the shifting performance is still good !

And there were all those highly skilled Shimano engineers working on designing the derailleur with new parts when all they had to do was stick in an old 105 adjuster and an offcut of old brake cable and it would have been sorted. I bet they feel silly - NOT!
FFS! Harden up and grow a pair :D

I am in process of installing an rd r8000, and found the barrel adjuster does not work. I could not believe Shimano would sell something like that, but reading this topic helped me stop trying to see what could be wrong, and I swapped out an adjuster from old derailleur.
I am still having problems getting it to shift onto largest cog. It looks like the rd has a couple optional positions for installing, so I have tried a couple. No change. Any ideas? Maybe another position.
I am pretty disappointed with Shimano at the moment.
