Coast to coast on Cyclocross bikes

Hi, my wife and I plan to do the C2C (whitehaven to Sunderland) on cyclocross bikes in October. I know that the official route has several "off road" sections but can anybody advise changes to make it a bit more off road, without us wishing we'd brought our mountain bikes!

    you wont have any problems on cycle cross bikes have done it over 3 dsys on a hardtail and 2 days on the road bike there is an off road section around Windlatter but is signposted as an alternative route as is another srction before hartside climb.
    thats the only 2 sections i would have described as off road and as i say are signposted as an alternative
    offroad route.
