Next bike advice 1.5k/2k

i have not cycled much lately and need to get my but in gear so will be using my old Trek 1.2 over winter, I fancy a new bike for next year and am wondering if worth buying in the sales over the next couple of months. I fancy something like a Giant Defy Advance 2 but as yet have not seen any at a sale price, does anyone have any recommendations around the 1.5/2k mark? For info I am 48, weigh to much at 16 stone and 6ft tall and will be joining the local cycling club when we move house in a few months time.
