Will 26" hybrid tyres fit/work on my wifes 26" MTB?

Evening all,

This might be a entry for the stupid question of the year award but bear with me.

I've just bought a bike to do a bit of fitness on and get more bike time for when I can't ride my enduro motorbike, and also use for family bike rides with the wife and son. I dug the wifes old >15 year old cheapo Apollo MTB out of the garage from where its been for the last 10 years, fully expecting it be be rusted and seized then buying her a new one, but all thats wrong is the bull bars have got some surface rust and tyres are flat and a bit cracked so I need some new tyres. For family bike rides it will only be cycle tracks with maybe the occasional grassy patch so thought MTB tyres would be a bit needless so maybe hybrid tyres would be the way forward. Shes got 26" wheels, but I wasn't sure if the rims are a different width or shape or if there were any pitfalls. Like I said it might be a stupid question but short of going to Halfords and risking talking to someone who doesn't know one end of a bike from the other I figured the only stupid question is the one I didn't ask.

Also to tag on another question while I'm trying to make here bike easier to ride, if I replace the chain what do I need to look for regarding size? Does it depend on how many gears are on the back wheel? I'm used to motorbikes where most chains are the same so this whole 8/9/10 speed thing is a bit confusing.

Thanks in advance,

Gareth

Hybrid tyres should be fine, as long as they are 26 inch. I would look for some minimal treaded MTB tyres like Kenda Small Block 8. Fatter is more comfy.
6,7 and 8 speed chains are all the same size. ( I doubt it is 9 or 10 speed.)

But if you love her you will take it to the dump and buy her a proper bike. There's probably a reason it's hiding in the shed.

Thanks for the reply cooldad. I did offer to buy her a new bike, but as long as she has got new billiards she seems happy. I'll have a look how much things are going to add up to and maybe apply some man maths to convince her to have a new one.

    Thanks again
