Ulrich and Schleck taking their only TDF while still in the Young Rider Classification

I have to say, I find the whole young rider classification a bit meh.

There's usually only one or two at the sharp end and the others are a long way down. The age limit is an odd one too given that everything else in cycling is U23.

I've thought in past that it should be for debutants regardless of age. I'm not convinced by this idea though.

They should ditch the young rider classification and bring back the combined jersey. Just for the jersey.

(To answer people's next question, it is the sum of a rider's positions in yellow, green and polka dot competitions)

Wow Teejay van Ladygarden has been with BMC for a long time not bringing in the results. I hadn't realised it was THAT long of I'm honest. I remember when he was with HTC before that.

The young rider classification has to be his best ever result for BMC surely?

Know what you mean, but those wins in the US (Pro Challenge and ToC) would've been good for the sponsors.

He was 5th in 2012, when he won the young rider classification, and again in 2014. He was third on GC at the start of stage 17 in 2015 when he had to abandon due to illness.

I know everyone likes to hate on TVG, but he's a decent GC rider.

Trouble with the young rider jersey is it gives another outside GC rider a reason to ride conservatively and protect their jersey rather than go for a stage win.

The one reason I liked it has gone this race. It used to be that just four riders stood out from the peleton and you could pick them out quickly - but now half the front of the race are wearing white plus ads and poor Yates doesn't stand out at all.

This is true. I felt that yesterday was the first time id seen the Orica Scott jersey when they had a couple of guys in the break.

They were pretty anonymous for a team with one of the jerseys for much of the race. This is another reason I liked the Team Classification - TeamSky were obvious with those horrible yellow helmets.

I know sponsorship would not allow this but I would love to see no yellow, white, light-green team kits and no two teams wearing basically the same apart from sponsorship logos
