Replace forks on a 26” or build a new hardtail?

I still currently ride my Kinesis Maxlight XC2 (circa 2009), however the Fox F100RLT forks are getting really old now and are getting to be a pain to service. Since I built this bike things have moved on quite a lot, straight steerers and 26” wheels are clearly not where the market now.
So, I have 2 options and would like your opinions/advice on them:
1) I look for a replacement fork with a straight steerer for 26” wheels and continue to ignore the existence of larger wheels and tapered steerers.
2) I start over and get up to date with where mtb tech is currently. If this is the way to go, what are some good frame/fork/wheel options to look at?
For option 2 I would be most likely to look at just buying a frame/forks/wheels since the components I currently have are fine and would save some cash if I could just transfer them over. I also tend to prefer building my own bike, so I can mix-and-match parts rather than have to accept what packages companies try to sell.
As for me and my riding, one of my current targets is to cycle the South Downs Way in a day, but I go out riding the trails around the Surrey Hills area as well as trail centre riding in Wales. So I would be after something that will be fun to ride, but is light and fast enough to ride all day.

Stick with 26". I've just built up a 26" hardtail and there are some absolute bargain components available.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350
