Not enough room for disc pads and rotor

Hello
I decided to try and replace the disc pads myself, however there only seems to be a piston on one side and it doesn't seem to go back in completely there is 3 mm sticking out, I can put the pads in but no space in between them....
I have tried a plastic tyre remover and screw driver and feels like it just won't go back any further. The brake unit is Shimano BR-M596. I bought compatible pads.
What's my next step?
Thanks in advance
Vicky

Put the old pads back in so you don't damage anything, get a big screwdriver or something sturdy, and twist hard.I don't do smileys.

Also you can see the piston isn't sitting square, pull the lever to try and ease it out a bit so it sits square again.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
