How many extra links?

Hi,

I have just put the new Tiagra 4700 groupset on my wife's tourer, and she wants me to change her cassette from 11-32 to 11-34 which Tiagra 4700 supports.

So how many extra chainlinks will I need to add compared to her existing chain? Is it just 2 more links as the cassette has 2 more teeth or am I missing something?

Many thanks

Chris

Wrap the chain around the largest chainring and largest sprocket without going through the rear mech then add two whole links.

Before adding links, try it with the current chain length, you may find it works OK as is.

If you get a big bang when you change to big sprocket and big chainring the chain is too short.

    Thanks all.

Lincolndave, does that method work regardless of whether the rear mech is the short or long cage version?

Unless the chain is seriously taught at present, I wouldn't bother adding any extra links.

You'd be surprised on the different lengths of chain you can have on the same gearing.

I've changed between 25T & 28T cassettes without amending the chain length.

Yes it does, but just changing the cassette with two teeth difference, you old chain should be long enough
