Jersey Recommendations

I'm looking for a jersey with a zipped pocket big enough to hold my iPhone 7 plus. Usually I have to wear baggies with pockets in to carry it, my saddle bag is too small and I don't want it attached to the handle bars. I need to carry one since a car decided to remove me from my direction of traffic and place me in hospital, It'll be so the missus can see where I am or if I need to buzz her for a pick up :(

Any tips and advice much appreciated.

There's 3 good size pockets on the rear of most jerseys. Provided they've an elasticated top, your phone is safe enough just put in one of them. It isn't going to bounce out.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

Yeah, I'm thinking if I came off the phone will, more than likely remove itself from those too... obviously there's no guarantee I wouldn't not damage the phone if in a zipped pocket when coming off but I just feel it's a safer option.

Expensive option but the Rapha brevet jerseys have a big zip pocket in the back (designed for a rain shell or gilet) which would've plenty big enough. They come is various types - so might be worth a look.

Do you need your iPhone 7 when you ride a bike? You could get an inexpensive dumb phone for 10 pounds or so, which will fit anywhere, the battery will last 3 times longer and will get you out of trouble if needed. Incidentally they also weigh a fraction of an iphone and you won't care if you drop it.

With a different phone number you also have a chance of being left in peace when you ride your bike... it's a win-win situation

And you can give this number to your girlfriend so your wife will never find out about her :D

Yeah - you just need to pay for another data plan for tracking...

I have many jerseys. And a Galaxy S8 plus, which is more or less the same size.

It does slightly protrude from the side pocket on some of them, but in the middle pocket it fits in all of them.

    They are:

    Assos Mille jersey
    Assos Cento
    Assos Cape Epic
    Rivelo Pembridge jersey
    Chapeau Tempo
    Chapeau Club
    Craft Verve Glow

    hahaha... where do I start?

the extra cost for the phone and data plan may be better off spent on a Rapha that'd last years... I hope! Of course I could just swap the sim and carry all the data and benefits, I have thought of that and it is an option but I do feel I've made my mind up that I need a zip pocket.

I like the look of the Rapha that has been suggested, and the long sleeve version... maybe I just need to try a couple of rides with it sitting in my jersey back pockets as suggested.

Keep the jersey options coming as my LBS has a limited supply of tops but can order in.

    Cheers

Yeah, just ride with it in your back middle pocket. Should be fine. And get it insured.

Pretty pointless people suggesting it goes in your back pocket then

Buy a 2nd hand iPhone 4s for a few quid and swap over your sim when you go out on the bike ... That way your phone will still do all the things you said you needed but it'll fit in a pocket or saddle bag no worries and if the worst should happen you're not £900 down on a lost/burst phone ...

Zip pockets tend, on the whole, to be much smaller and you may struggle to get even smaller phones in them.

Safety pin in the middle of the top of a normal pocket? I did for a while cos I was paranoid about a new phone jumping out on a bump - realised I had forgotten the pin for a week or so without harm so stopped bothering. Never jumped out since

Try Rapha. The zipped pockets in most of their jerseys are pretty spacious. The pocket extends up above the zip so a large phone can usually be fitted in with a bit of manouvering.

A simple, sensible, zero cost solution ...

  • I have sewn a few strips of Velcro into some of my jersey middle pockets. This does just as good a job as a zipped pocket plus I don't need to search out specific brands.

Or sew in a loop of elastic. Or a zip

You could but the Velcro is a lot easier to fix. Cut to length and sew in. Use elastic and it can make the jersey uncomfortable if it pulls and the zip need to be the correct length.

Make a loop of elastic the right length to be just tight enough around the phone and then sew it to the bottom of the pocket. Personally I think it would be a neater and easier solution and certainly wouldn't pull. And it wouldn't matter if the phone was a bit taller than (or as tall as) the pocket. But Velcro would work fine.

I have had my phone jump out of an unzipped rear pocket when landing after bunny-hopping a road bump........

Not at all what you're asked for but what about a protective wallet like one of these:

    http://www.beerbabe.co.uk/ourshop/prod_ ... -Case.html

Slightly grippy, protects your phone in your pocket (and out to a certain extent if you come off). Maybe better to actually fall out and bounce along the road when covered in rubber than embed itself in your spine!

I've got one just for keeping my phone in day to day as it's great to just sling in your bag or jeans back pocket. I don't actually ride with a phone but it would be perfect if I did.

I've a few pairs of La Passione bib shorts, and they have a 'radio pocket' in the back. An IP7 could easily fit in there, and would be kept in place by tension in the shorts and the jersey on top of it.
    Good shorts, too.

I've a pair of bibs with a radio pocket in - no idea what use it is. I'd have to strip off to have access to it...

Emmmm....its for fitting a race radio in...thought that would have been obvious.

Well OBVIOUSLY - but how many people are able to race in 'Sufferfest' bib shorts ? I could keep my fags in there I suppose.

Make sure you put it in a plastic bag - it will get drenched with sweat even if its not raining! If it fits then personally I prefer something like a Topeak tribag or similar.
