Cant connect Garmin Edge 705 to PC - Alternatives

Dear All,
my Garmin 705 does not connect anymore to the PC (it charges only). Tried different PCs (Mac, PC), different OS, different cables. Read many posts, but no answer. Talked to Garmin, they say its too old and they would NOT repair it. I have two questions.
1.ALTERNATIVE USE. I can "see" the SD and its contents just putting it in a normal card reader. If I only could save my workouts in the SD card, that would be fine for me. DO YOU KNOW IF THIS IS POSSIBLE???? I can see the workouts, but did not understand from the 705 menu how to transfer those without Computer. Please help!
2. REPAIR I think it can be either the filesystem corrupted, or the USB socket (though the pins look fine). I got socked of water, same water might be entered from the USB socket (there is no gum protection anymore). That's why I think it might be the problem. In case, has anyone of you solved a similar problem just changing the USB socket?

705 looks ancient, sounds like it's dead?
Get a new one! Or get a Wahoo and never need to plug a cable into a computer ever again, it's liberating!0 -
Mine it was used probably 8 times total. Anyone with a more constructive idea?0

In fairness, it was a constructive suggestion. The 705 is old now, I think released in 2008 when I bought one and Garmin have obviously stopped developing firmware for it or reconditioning them to send out replacements. You might be able to repair it, but in all likelihood it will go wrong again. Your choice then is simple; do without a device or replace it with something new. If the latter, Wahoo all the way.
You could try these to see if they can help you though if you choose to persevere.

Still using my old 605, of similar vintage, as a ride recorder and GPS. And even occasionally on walks. Getting my money's worth, even if it was a birthday pressie all those years ago.
Too late for you now but I use small piece of electrical tape over the USB socket for waterproofing.
May be misunderstanding your question but why can't you just use the micro SD card to transfer from device to PC? Just a file copy?0 -
Thanks Orraloon, finally someone willing to help properly. Thing is, the workouts are NOT saved on the SD and I can not find anyway to export them there. This is THE question.0

Try using a hair dryer to push warm air into device via the USB socket to see if you can dry any moisture causing a short inside the USB connectors inside the unit. Or actually carefully dismantle it and check there is no corrosion preventing the USB data channels from working properly?
Otherwise try ebay for a working 705?FFS! Harden up and grow a pair0 -
Have tried with the hair drier already. Anyone who can help on the SD card topic PLEASE?0

You say you can see the SD card. That's not surprising given that you're taking it out of the 705. So that won't work as the workouts aren't saved to the SD card, nor is there any way, it appears, to default to doing that in the future. My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

Ok, I managed to make it work. Big thanks to everyone. To those who just advise to buy the brand new model, good on ya0

There's nothing wrong with that suggestion. The 705 is 10 years old dealing with 10 years of PC updates etc. As long as it continues to work, great. It does a job.My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

If your having problems with it, plug it into the PC.
Perform a soft reset ( Mode and Reset), the screen should "flash" once briefly
Perform a power on with the joystick in the middle held "Up". This forces it into USB mode.
I've extended the life of a few 705's that way.Intent on Cycling Commuting on a budget, but keep on breaking/crashing/finding nice stuff to buy.
