Can a worn chainring wear out a new chain?

Hello, my middle chainring is completely worn out due to my own negligence so when I got a new chain it slipped on that ring. On the small ring it's okay but there is a rumbling sound and it's not exactly smooth. So I ordered both chainrings... then I realised I needed a hex key I didn't have... and then I realised I needed a crank puller. So while waiting for everything to arrive, it's been two weeks/200 miles of riding on that small ring up hills with my new chain on the rumbling small ring. I'm now worried that the new chain might be damaged in some way from this, and if I put it on the new chainrings it's going to wear them out quickly again.

Am I being paranoid or should I get a new chain when I install the new chainrings? Thanks

  • I doubt much damage has been done over 200 miles , As you said middle chain ring , then mentioned the small one , try running your chain on the large chainring and see how it sounds.

Yeah, it will take longer than that I think.

Can't you get the chain rings off with the crank in situ? I've always managed that - you need to turn them a bit then you can feed them over the crank and off that way. It's a bit less hassle unless you're doing the BB at the same time.
I'm left handed, if that matters.
