....well not quite yet for the northern hemisphere but its never that far away in Yorkshire lets be honest.

I need some new ones; I have some Spring/Autumn ones from Morvelo which are ok for chilly'ish rides at that time of year but I'll need something that'll take me through a winter of road spray and cold. They have to be close fitting over the (road) shoe as I don't want to look like I have a dog pooh bags on my feet please!

Thanks

I have 4 sets of overshoes for different conditions.
If it's not that cold but wet I just use Velotoze. Good waterproof overshoes, cheap but only last me 5 or 6 rides. Probably user error but I'm on at least my 4th set.
Rapha Oversocks for cold dry days. Ok for what I paid in the sale.
Rapha Pro Team overshoes. Used these a lot, waterproof, warmish. Only got the one winter out of them as now looking tatty.
Bontrager softshell overshoes. Amazing kit. Not as "good looking" as the Rapha and they are bulkier, but they do a really good job on the very cold wet horrible days. Lasted me at least 3 years. I don't wear them for fast rides or races as too bulky, but they definitely serve a really useful purpose. Think they are thermal as have a fleecy/fluffy inside.

If i was in a fast ride on a really cold day i put hand warmers in my socks when I'm wearing the Rapha Pro team overshoes. Helps keep the toes snug and warm.
  • Why not buy some DEfrosters and be done-with?

At this price, bit of a bargain. Got the MTB ones which are great...

    Thanks for that.
I can't get on with Specialized shoes though, they kill me for unknown reasons.
  • I've never found a pair of overshoes that will get me through the winter, even coupled with 2 sets of merino socks, but the best of a bad bunch for me were just the thick neoprene dhb ones off wiggle. Thought about going for the Sealskinz Halo for added viz, but for what it's worth ended up going for the Northwave Celsius 2 last year. They're better, but still not completely toasty sub zero. So I think it might be my feet that are wonky.

  • GripGrab Arctic overshoes have seen me through the last 2 Yorkshire winters. Warmest I've found.

Planet X neoprene at £14.99 are a good buy. Combine with warm socks and you should be fine down to around 0C.

  • Planet X neoprene I used these down to almost freezing conditions very good as once your feet & hand s go so cold you can't continue to ride!

If it's just cold I use the Planet X ones
If it's Wet and Cold then Velotoze are great. They do still let in a bit of water, although that may be because of hairy legs. I suspect if you had shaved legs they would create a better seal.
  • I got fed-up with Velotoze making my feet sweat, so cut a pair up.

I now have a pair of Velotozcaps (!), and two bands of Velotoze that I wear over the overlap of overshoes, or top of my Defrosters where water run-down occurs in very heavy rain. The toe caps att additional warmth without building up too much sweat.
  • I've found Sealskinz Lightweight Halo overshoes to be very good. (currently 50% off @ £20 @ Wiggle)

    Failing that, take a look at Acycles sale on winter cycling shoes;
