How to fix broken brake cable?

I'm hoping someone can help me. Just bought a cheapo second hand "mountain" bike. (Probably just a glorified road bike, however I just use it for cycling around town).
However the brake cable to the front has totally snapped. I'm fairly handy with diy stuff, but I cannot see how to get the brake cable off. Also looking on the net, there's all sorts of different types of cable, with different ends on.
Can anyone give me some help in the right direction!
