Shimano Nexus 7

I have popped my Shimano Nexus out of the hub as it was slipping in a couple of the gears quite a lot and I thought a little clean up, re-oiling and greasing was on the cards.
So my question is what oil? I've seen quite a lot of people dunk them in a jug of ATF fluid, let that drain off and then grease the relevant parts with Shimano Grease. Has anyone used more run of the mill grease with no ill effects?
Also, I'm thinking that a dunk in petrol to clean everything up before I start would be a good idea. What does the panel think?

You won't find many opinions here about lubricating an internal gear hub...
Look here and you might have more luck....
