How many spacers do I need for my BB?

Hey guys,

I'm using a Shimano HollowTech 2 bottom bracket, a SM-BB52, and will be fitting it on to a 73mm shell, I don't know how many spacers I need to use.

My BB came with 2 large, 1 medium, and 1 small spacer. I don't know how many spacers it had on previously. There is no instructions with the BB, only a leaflet about safety...

Is there a typical setup I should use, or is there a way of figuring out how many I need? I am completely new to biking and this is the first time I've done anything more than adjust brakes, so you may need to explain it like I'm 5 :p

EDIT: This is for a MTB, the front mech is mounted to the seat tube.
