Evening guys,

Im going to be renewing my tyres and rim tape soon and not sure whether to go and get some more rim tape (I can get Joes or Stans rim tape depending on which shop...) or do I give gorilla tape a shot. Have seen a lot of people recommending it. Is it really as good?
Cheers

How very topical, for today I went tubeless on my 29er after threatening to do it for a year. I used Gorilla tape, since it was there on the same display as the Stan's stuff in the LBS I happened upon. Was dead easy to fit the tape, punch a small hole for the valve and get the valve in. The front tyre went perfectly... tape, valve, tyre, gloop, inflate, done. Not a single bubble or any leakage and it has been holding pressure all evening. The rear was another matter. The tyre beads did not want to pop onto the rim, no matter what pump or compressor I used. I eventually got it on using a shed load of soapy water and then when I added the gloop it spurted and bubbled but eventually popped onto the rim and is holding tight.

I have no other experience of this so can say the Gorilla tape was good but mixed results on the actual fitting process. Rims are the Cube-fitted Alex Rims ZX24 (19mm) and tyres are Maxxis High Roller II EXO TR (2.25") and Ardent EXO TR (2.3"). Not ridden them yet (except around the garden in triumph).

  • I've got the same tyres, (at the moment!) although my HR is 2.4, and had the same issue. The front went on easy, the rear was a barsteward!
Just thinking I might try the gorilla tape as I believe its cheaper as I need to renew the front tape. also I didn't tape the rim myself, LBS did it for me, so as its my first time having a go myself cheaper is better so when I feck it up I can just try again!

Of course, eagle-eyed nerds will have spotted my error. The tyres sizes are the other way around (2.3 HRII and 2.25 Ardent). Just wanted to say that.

  • Ok so now i need to work out WHICH gorilla tape to get!
I had a quick look on Amazon last night to compare prices and work out where to get some and there flippin' loads of 'em!

Any suggestions on which one would be suitable?
