100mi on new wheels from LBS, spokes become loose

I bought a new wheel set that an LBS ordered in and fitted for me, it's a entry-level bike so I didn't really go for anything like Hope.

I've only done around 100 miles on the new wheels.

A few spokes on the rear had become very loose, one had almost come out as the nipple has detached.

LBS are sorting out the issue, I bought the set from them as they advertise as custom wheel build specialists. They said when the new wheels arrive they check the tension and trueness and told me he suspects the manufacture didn't apply anti-seize to the nipples - to be honest I'm really not sure how that would make a difference to the spokes becoming loose.

They described as they may have to "start over" with the wheel, and didn't seem happy at all.

Is this a common issue? I thought new wheels should be pretty solid if they have been built properly.

Loosing confidence as I havn't used any LBS in my area without some sort of issue with the completed work.

Perhaps he means threadlock / loctite. Though when I asked about some seized nipples a few weeks ago I did get at least one response back saying spoke nipples should not be threadlocked in the first place!

    Contradiction much!

Certainly should not happen and they should certainly be fixing it FOC under your rights under the Consumer Rights Act (replaced the Sale of Goods act though in many cases the wording is identical).

I had a similar problem - it was on a new bike (not an aftermarket wheelset).

The LBS fixed it (retensioned and trued the wheel) free of charge but weren't happy about doing it. They said a few trips around Llandegla forest was excessive usage.

My home built wheels lasted 2 years before they needed some TLC......unless it was a cheap shitty bike that's effectively saying the bike wasn't fit for purpose.

    All sorted (fow now?).

I was told the tension was way below satisfactory and applied what they called 'nipple glue'. Will see as the miles go on.
