Hello
So I have a GIANT 2013 Defy 4 Compact and have been trying to learn now to fix the gears my self.
The gears were jumping around alot so I replaced like for like:
KMC Z7 Chain
SRAM PG850 11x28, 8s Cassette
These are the original parts fitted on the original bike which worked fine.
Anyway I did spend hours trying to get the gears to be smooth. In the end I took it too my local bike shop and he replaced the one thing I had not replaced ie the rear mech cable (I had already replaced the front mech cable).
Anyway after the kid in the shop had replaced the cable and adjusted I took the bike on the road. The gears were better but still the chain would fall off the front of the Draulier.
Today I went back in to get a 2nd opinion and the mechanic was first of all blaming the internet for people trying to fix there bikes lol
He also said that KMC chains are rubbish (Even though I have ready afterwards they are made by Shimano).
He said the chain was too wide for the cassette but how can that be if its the original one?
Is there any truth in Shimano components work best with all Shimano parts?
If the end I was just tired and let him replace the cassette with a Shimano one and replace the chain with a SRAM chain.
Anyway it would not put me off trying to fix it again next time.
Cheers
Paul

KMC are not made by Shimano but are perfectly good.
A chain can't fall off the front derailleur, it goes through it?
Unless it's a 1/8" single speed chain it can't be too wide as 5-8 speed chains are the widest geared chains made.
No truth at all in Shimano plus Shimano working better.
Replacing chain and cassette will have no effect at the front AT ALL.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
You need a new LBS. Your front mech limits need adjusting.Ben
