Dumb statement of the day, but surely 11/32 will be fine as long as you don't run anywhere near big/big...
Condor Super Acciaio, Record, Deda, Pacentis.
Curtis 853 Handbuilt MTB, XTR, DT Swiss and lots of Hope.
Genesis Datum Gravel Bike, Pacentis (again).
    Genesis Equilibrium Disc, 105 & H-Plus-Son.

    Mostly Steel.

I run 11-29 for climbs. Even that is outside Campag's recommendation of a 16 tooth gap.
I get some chain slap due to the range. I wouldn't recommend a 11-32. Go compact.
No need for 52x11 unless it is a race and you can sustain it.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Hi Mark - you can run a 12/29 on a 52/36 Campagnolo EPS set-up with no issues, you'll just need to get the chain length sorted.

Wholeheartedly disagree with this statement. I had 50x11 for a short while on my new bike until I changed to a 53/39 on the front and I was constantly being dropped on even mild descents where I couldn't spin my legs fast enough to keep up with those on a bigger top gear.

I often see people post that you don't need a big top gear. That's fine if you only ride on your own or strictly social rides where speed isn't the name of the game but if you do any fast paced group riding on undulating terrain you're really going to be longing for at least a 52x11.

Sounds like a race to me. Maybe not official, maybe nothing said, but points are being made. 50x11 easy does over 30mph.
Fine if you can sustain it but after climbing a Pyrenean mountain chances are you are after a rest.

Gearing is personal. Any one who say you dont need a gear that tall should remember this. You dont need a gear that tall but others might sometimes.

Also tyre size affects gearing which is never mentioned in these threads.

A record mech will take a 29t cog. Larger may be possible depending on the shape of thd hanger.

This is true but I saw most of the "macho" riders blow out at least one day during my trip to the Pyrenees last year.
Personal, but unless it is a race...

Race or not, I don't like getting dropped and I generally like to ride as fast as my capabilities allow me. I can't be the only cyclist who thinks the same as this.

Fine. My point though is that the gears you use for training runs in Blighty are irrelevant to cycling through the Pyrenees as the OP will be doing.

When i started riding that's why people used to ride fixed during the winter. Get used to a faster cadence and you'll be fine with a 52x13 - bimbling along at 100rpm will keep you at 32mph, a cruising speed fine for most club runs!

But a cruising speed on club runs isn't what I'm talking about. I'm talking about those slight downhills where the pace can easily get to 35mph+. That's where you start longing for an extra gear.
