Replace 6700 with Tiagra 4700 Rear Derailleur

Sorry if the answer to this question is obvious. I've got a 6700 groupo with a short cage derailleur.

I want the option of a couple of lower gears for the hilliest of rides (32T). As I understand it I need a medium cage derailleur and longer chain (currently running a 28T cassette).

It would seem that replacing the rear mech with Tiagra 4700 is the most cost effective approach but would it be compatible with 6700 shifters?

Ta.

Have a look through this compatibility info.

You have to scroll a bit to get the road drivetrain stuff. Looks like 6700 shifters are not compatible with 4700 rear mech. Look for a 4600 or 5700 GS rear mech instead. Not much in the price and will be OK with the 6700 shifters

^^ This, the cable pull ratio was changed on the 4700 10 speed components, so the RD won't work with your 6700 STI.

If your RD 6700 is the later RD 6700-A model, which is rated for a 30T low sprocket, you can try winding the B-Tension screw in or use a longer B-Tension screw, with a suitable longer chain and CS-HG500-10 11-32T cassette.

Make sure you test it in the workstand and you are happy it will all work together out on the road. If you prefer to go for a new RD then as above a RD 5701-GS is rated for a 32T low sprocket and will work with your 6700 STI.

To add to the above, although the new tiagra 4700 derailleur is a definite non starter, you can alternatively use any sora medium cage derailleur, or any Shimano MTB derailleur of 9 speed or less.

If using MTB derailleurs beware of buying one that doesn't have the barrel adjuster as you will need to use a downtube/inline barrel adjuster to set up indexing.

So it wasn't a daft question. Thanks for your help, everyone.

How do I know whether I've a 6700 or 6700-A RD? It's at least 3 years old if that helps.

The RD 6700-A model will have 30T stamped into the top of the outer pulley cage. If your RD is the O.E. that was fitted to the bike, it may well be the A model. My 2013 bike came fitted with one and a 12-28T cassette. I fitted a 12-30T cassette with a minor adjustment (screw in) to the B-Tension screw.

You also have then option to use a 33T inner chainring. https://specialites-ta.com/plateaux/roa ... nring.html
