Going to 1x10

Afternoon all I've read a few conversion threads but just have a couple of questions specifically to my situation.
In my box of spares I have a old chainset which I've picked up a cheap superstar 38t front ring for. Should I mount this on the inside or outside of the crank.

Also I have a pair of dura ace 7900 levers I was potentially going to use but I believe this limits me to a 9 speed mtb rear mech. If I went with these what mech would be best to use?
Or would it be better to spend a bit more and get some sram shifters and a 10speed rear mech such as at gx10 with a clutch?

Thanks in advance.

Clutch rear with 1x is ideal. Obvs also go for a wider cassette if you can - 11-34 shimano xt or such. I am not sure if a set of road shifters will pull enough cable for the rear mech you are talking about, the sram one. Check first.

Yep I don't think the shifters I have will be compatible with the 10speed sram mech but could use a shift mate I think? They seem to get decent reviews?

Inside generally gives a slightly better chaining. Yes on 9 speed for Shimnao - I think the 'holy grail' is the Shadow XT mech.
I prefer SRAM for Cyclocross and the X7/X9 or GX Type 2.1 all work really well.
Although plenty of people use road mechs and have no issues. NW chainrings do a surprisingly good job.

I did a 1x conversion of a SRAM cross bike using superstarcomponents I/O ring and left the standard SRAM rival rear mech one.

I then upgraded to a SRAM Rival 1x groupset.

...I preferred the standard Rival mech that the 1x and never had any issues with chain drop etc...

I've decided to go down the sram route. I got a good deal on some apex shifters and a gx rear mech. Thanks your all your replies.
