New Brakes - do I need new discs too?

As per the title - just bought a pair of XT hydraulic brakes to replace a pair of avid elixir.
i was going to take my bike to a shop to replace the brakes but it looks like even a DIY klutz like me might be able to swap the old brakes for new ones. My question is - do I need new discs and, if not, should I clean them back?
The bike is a 4 year old giant xtc - if that makes any difference.
cheers,
wily

As long as the mounts are compatible (post or IS), you should just be able to swap them. The hoses might need shortening. Which can e done without needing to bleed if you're careful.

For cleaning is isopropyl alcohol, plenty on Ebay, cheap, and good for cleaning all sorts of things. Get 99% plus pure.I don't do smileys.

depends if the discs line up with the pads properly. HS1 discs don't line up well with shimano brakes0
