custom build quote

thinking about ordering a Roubaix S Works custom build as I don't have the budget for a factory build with Sram Etap at £8500

How much detail is normally given or requested in a typical quote?

I'd expect to see each major component valued separately ie frame, wheelset, group, etc.

I have priced the parts only at £5000, based on frame at RRP plus a Sram red disc groupset and Ksrium Pro Disc wheels, plus parts, at prices I could buy them for as a retail customer.

The only quote I have in is for £6000ish.

Seems a big difference...surely not £1000 for labour?? Was thinking £250ish??

Have you missed bits off ? Stems ? Bars? Saddles ? Posts ?

    £1000 is a tad much.

TBH you can do a lot of it yourself. Ask them to sort the headset and bottom bracket and the rest goes on with an allen key.

no exactly £5000 included bar tape and inner tubes.

my thinking is they can buy the bits cheaper than I can, and they will make a margin on the labour.

I have fitted a groupset so apart from cutting the steerer tube and pressing the headset I could do everything else

I will wait for the other quotes to come in and ask them to break it down.

They can buy the bits in cheaper than you - but if they pass it on at cost - they wont stay in business very long. So they're not really looking for sale frames and things -its all off the shelf.

Whenever I've done the same (a couple of times fairly recently) I'd expect the quote to be rrp for all the components and them to wave the labour cost to build it.
This would then be where you could start negotiating on price.
If they've included a decent bike fit then your room to negotiate is probanly limited but I certainly wouldn't expect to pay a grand over retail.
Are you sure you're being priced on what you think you've asked for? Etap rather than Red?

I wouldn't expect them to supply parts at cost, but they must be making a margin supply parts at the same price I can buy retail, as they will buy wholesale.

Plus charging me say 3 hours labour

Problem with a self build is specialised only warrant the frames when built up by an authorised dealer

Can't you buy all the bits yourself and then pay an authorised dealer to build it all up for you?

Obviously it's going to be more expensive buying the bits from your LBS as opposed to an internet discounter, so I don't understand why you're aggrieved.

Have you asked them about you supplying the parts, they supply frameset, headset, b/b, labour?

    Who said I was aggrieved?

My question was, to what level of detail would I expect a quote to be, and what is a typical labour charge for a build?

wI'll see what the other quotes stack up like
  • £250 for an assembly/ build sounds about right if you are supplying everything.
The extra £750 you've been quoted is probably to put you off wasting the shops time.
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

I agree with above. Standard quote tactic when you don't really want the job because it's not worth it. You put an over the top quote in. If customer accepts it. Result.

Most shops are tied into buying through the official distribution chain - as a result you can often buy the parts cheaper through online outlets selling OEM components than they can.......
FFS! Harden up and grow a pair :D
