11sp chainrings work fine with 10s chain. But, the example you give, not quite. You can't put 9000 chainrings on 7900 cranks if that's specifically what you're thinking (5 arm vs 4 arm). But, an entire 9000 chainset, yes.0 -
Personally run 11 speed cranksets on two 9 speed bikes. Absolutely not problem. As long as we're talking Shimano or Sram.
I think it's Campa who make those 11 speed cranksets which have smaller chainrings spacing (not sure though who exactly). Those will cause chain rubbing for wider than 11 speed chains and you gotta use spacers to move one of the chainrings.0
