Shimano 105/RS505 versus Ultegra/RS685

Aside from the "slight" differences in shifting smoothness and weight what are peoples opinions on the ergonomics of the shifters. The RS505 'look' long and big whereas the RS685 look more compact and fit the hand better. I have only ridden a bike with the RS685 hence the question.
However, there does seem to be a fair difference in price on certain brands like Trek & Specialized even when the frame is exactly the same.
