I thinking of buying a Canyon Grand AL 7.9 which looks very good value for the money. Pros and Cons please from buying from a direct sales brand ?

Like all internet buying, you are typically forsaking face to face service and advice for a lower price
A simple google will throw up tons of complaints for Canyon late deliveries, cracked frames and non existent customer service, however there are other people who are too busy out riding their Canyon bikes rather than sitting at a computer writing positive feedback of their Canyon experiences.

Positive experience from me. Bike was in stock, quickly despatched, responsive to spares enquiries (mech hanger for us), no complaints.

For that kind of money I'd be looking at a Bird Zero TR or a Ragley Marley, both British brands so it's easier if you have issues.
Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"
