Thule 984 neccesary for carbon frames?

I have the Thule 591 style roof carrier for my bike. I understand that these type of clamping roof racks are not suitable for carbon frames. I have read that you "need" a 984 carbon frame protector. Does anybody have any experience with this? Or an alternative? I have 3 of these holders for the top of my car (ready to drive to the world champs in September!) 15 quid a pop for a little piece of flexible rubber seems quite extreme to me......

    Mates done lots of trips with the same holder you have. Wrap some cloth/foam round the frame and don't go mad clamping it there and you're good to go. My bikes survived a few trips like that anyway.
