What part of a PF30 bearing fails?

I fitted a Wheels Manufacturing pf30 to 24mm bearing. For those who don't know it , it's like a PF30 except the bearing are in 2 halves of a threaded metal shell that fits through the bracket and screw together. Anyway, that was 6 months but less than a thousand km ago.
On my Sunday ride it suddenly started creaking. I have not pulled it all apart yet.

So my question is: Does the creaking usually come from the balls in the race, or is it from the race moving in the mounting/ shafts.

Interface between the shell and the outer surface of the BB in my experience although the spindle shaft/inner race interface is also a potential source as is a dry or contaminated bearing. Best remove it, inspect, clean, re-grease and re-fit. If no better, replace. HTH

It's usually the bearing into the bottom bracket cartridge that has a slack fit from the factory and then works it's way loose as you pedal.
