August Short Break Ideas

Morning all, a couple of us are hoping to arrange a short break away around the end of August.
Leaving Thursday evening, back Sunday evening.
Want something that won't break the bank, easy bike hire and the ability to ride up a nice hills / mountains would be great - although as our other halves will be coming, we might have to give up on the mountains to pick somewhere with slightly more alternative social activities.
I'd love to go to Majorca, but I'm guessing it will be very expensive and very busy at this time of the year.
Just looking for some ideas for somewhere maybe less well known that might offer better value for money.
Any input much appreciated.

My in-laws live in Mojacar in the Ameria province in Spain. There is some excellent cycling to be had there and lots of the world tour teams have held their winter training camps there. The beaches and beach bars are also excellent to keep the other halves entertained.
Mojacar is a 45 minute drive from Almeria airport and a 90 minute drive from Murcia. My one caveat on this though is that it will be extremely hot for cycling in August but that could be the case wherever you go.0 -
Nice is a good option. Beach and shops if the other halves were interested. It's a short flight. Lots of bike hire options some deliver to your appartment. Very short trip from airport to central nice so convenient for a short break where time is important.
The madone and col d'eze on your door step.0 -

Just to add a bonus to Nice....You can get the train to San Remo, takes about 1.5 hrs and costs approx. £12 return. You could take the other halves on a gentle bike ride following a coastal cycle path. Its very flat and safe. Use a city hire bike in San Remo, 5 mins walk from the station. Great fun, very scenic and loads of places for a nice lunch.

That time of year, the French Alps are great. Try around Lake Annecy, that'll work with cycling and social life.
Also, check out Slovaenia - around Lake Bled. I haven't been there for years but hoping between there and Ljubljana should keep the others halves happy.0 -
Anywhere in the South of France or Spain will be;
a) very busy
b) very hot
Hardly ideal for cycling. I would avoid Majorca like the plague in August.
Alps or Pyrenees would be nice if you like climbing, but again, quite busy, and could be quite hot too.
I would recommend Brittany, NW France. Cheap, easy to get too, never crowded and you should have decent, but not too hot weather in August. The cycling is excellent.0 -
Abruzzo in Italy is fantastic! Relatively undiscovered, most of the holiday makers will have left by late August but there will still be plenty of stuff going on (so not closed for the off-season) and it is 50km from the beach to the top of the Maiella mountains. The Giro is going there on Sunday this week (and so am I!) so you can check it out.
If you fly to Rome you should be able to find cheap flights and then it is a 2.5 - 3 hour drive over the mountains to the other side. Ryanair also fly to the local airport at Pescara, but there is only one flight a day and it is either very late in the evening or very early in the morning. If you decide to give it a go, send me a message and I'll give you as much information as you need.0
