Cheeky move by the quick step leadout.

That's a polite way of putting it...

Looks like Ewan beat Greipel in the sprint from the bunch

How on earth did the other teams let Quickstep get away with that?
A Movistar rider (probably Quintana) was quite near the front when QS made the move and he couldn't hold his teammate's wheel and the gap went.

That was great, as Fleche has just called it a masterpiece. Gaveria, not Ewan is the next Cav.

No GC riders lost time unless you think Rolland (+2.26) and Dennis (+5.32) are GC riders.

I realise that. Just meant, that with it being the most obvious thing to happen in the last 15k, how did the other GC teams not defend better against it. Was brilliantly executed by QS just surprised other GC teams weren't better placed. Pretty lucky in the end to only have lost 10s to Jungels.

QS actually get the finale right too! Gaviria takes his first GT stage

A pity Rai didn't get the finale right.
A pity too that Geraint couldn't quite bridge as given all the positioning, it was a small opportunity missed.
Jungels huge, but that's a load of work for someone contesting the GC.

Yeah Thomas had done well once Sky got swamped, he made sure he was at the front and if he'd just been a couple of spots further forward would have made the front group I reckon.

Why not? He was sixth last year.

    I take it back.

    Hadn't realised that.

    Rest day tomorrow I guess.

He is also much lighter than I would have thought watching him ride. 70kg at 1,89m according to Google.

Open goal really, he didn't have to outsprint much, did he?

Similarly, Greipel missed an open goal. All he had to do was spot what was going on, put out 850w for 2 mins and not have a mechanical...

Credit to Gaveria, but this win was nearly all about the excellently executed team plan (as you noted). Cav has had lots of those too, but Gaveria needs to win some head-to-heads against the top flight before claiming the crown (as would Ewan).

he already has beaten the best sprinter of this generation (Cav) a few times in one on ones and like Ewan doesn't put out as much power as the likes of Greipel and Kittel, but can get over hills and ramps better. he'll win many a giro and vuelta stage, and quite a few tour stages too... the lads only 22....

You mean Gavaria's the next Boonen (lite), if he wants to turn his hand to cobbles....

Especially when his teammate ran interference on Nizzolo.

Yeah I thought Nizzolo could have made the argument he was impeded there. Still think Gaviria would have taken it.

Did Greipel have a mechanical? It looked to me like he got bumped out of the echelon. Haven't read any post race interviews with him.

Thought Thomas did well, although a shame he missed the split when it came. One of those stages where it would have been nice to have Luke Rowe around I'm sure.

Greipel's saying his foot unclipped. Which is a really annoying way to lose the pink jersey!
"I was riding in the first echelon when I could just dodge the rider in front of me and at that moment my foot came loose from the pedal. That's how I got dropped from the first echelon," he said on the Lotto Soudal team's website.

Maybe they've both been buying cheap SPD-SLs from aliexpress? ;)
